Everyday civic infrastructure

The refurbishment of 107 Kingsgate Road is a work in progress and will reinstate a locally listed building as a flexible and inclusive community hub for Kilburn. Developed for the London Borough of Camden, the project positions the building as a form of everyday civic infrastructure – a place for socialising and cultural programmes combined with work spaces.

Led by a FLINTA* team of consultants, we have aimed to create a collaborative working environment where diverse perspectives actively inform design decisions.

The first phase focuses on the ground floor community hall, enabling early use while testing operational models. A coordinated Stage 3+ design addresses fire safety, accessibility, environmental performance and essential service upgrades, prioritising adaptability while safeguarding the building’s character.

Alongside technical delivery, the project establishes a framework for participatory design and local engagement. Working with One Kilburn and a wider network of community organisations, artists and young people, the proposed process invites multiple voices to shape the building’s future identity, embedding local authorship through small-scale, integrated making and art projects.

A second phase sets out a longer-term vision for the workspace building and wider Kingsgate cluster, supporting affordable creative production and community use, and establishing models for sustained investment, governance and stewardship.

*FLINTA is an acronym to describe a group of gender identities: Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Trans, Agender. It refer to people who are marginalised under patriarchal systems, including male-dominated fields such as architecture, planning, and engineering.
